How to use the tip calculator
Enter your bill amount (before tax if you prefer to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, or after tax if that is your habit). Click one of the quick buttons for 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%, or type any percentage in the field. Then set how many people are splitting the bill. The tip amount, total, and per-person share update instantly.
A note on tipping on tax: in the US it is common to tip on the pre-tax amount. In practice the difference on a typical restaurant bill is small, so either approach is fine.
Quick tip math in your head
To find 10% of any bill, move the decimal one place left: 10% of $58 is $5.80. Double it for 20%. Add half of the 10% to get 15% ($5.80 plus $2.90 is $8.70). For 18%, find 20% then subtract a small amount, or just use this calculator and skip the mental gymnastics entirely.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard tip percentage?
In the US, 18% to 20% is considered standard for sit-down restaurant service. Excellent service often earns 25% or more. Counter service, takeout, and delivery norms vary, but 10% to 15% is typical.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Most etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total (including tax) is also common. The difference on a $60 bill with 8% tax and a 20% tip is about $0.96, so pick whichever approach you prefer.
How do I split a tip evenly?
Enter the number of people in the split field. The calculator divides the full total (bill plus tip) by that number and shows the per-person amount. Each person pays that share, and the tip is covered.
Is this tip calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free, no signup required, and runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
